The purchasing question
A molded fiber trays quote needs both a consistent commercial comparison and a usable packing plan. A lower unit price can be offset by mold charges, freight or a poorer nesting arrangement. Confirm the same tray geometry, coating, weight and performance requirements before treating two offers as substitutes.
Calculation method
Normalize quotations per item, per 1,000 or per complete material order. Add excluded order freight and allocated tooling once. For a lifetime tooling view, divide mold and initial setup cost by expected lifetime items. For one nested stack, count floor((carton internal height − clearance − first tray height) ÷ pitch) + 1 when the first tray fits.
Worked example
Supplier A at €0.15 per tray plus €250 freight and €500 order tooling costs €2,250 for 10,000 trays. Supplier B at €160 per 1,000 plus €200 freight and €300 tooling costs €2,100. For an 850 mm carton, 10 mm clearance, 50 mm first height and 8 mm nesting pitch, one stack holds 99 trays and the order needs 102 cartons.
The €150 order advantage for B assumes equal specifications and delivery scope. The stack result does not price shipping: confirm footprint fit, carton size and transport rates separately. For a later annual scenario of 1,000,000 items at €0.21 recurring delivered cost plus €500 separate annual tooling, budget €210,500. This is a separate scenario, not a repeated allocation of the same mold charge.
Checks before using the result
- Check quote basis and the exact quantity covered by the price.
- Ask whether freight, coating, setup and tooling are already included.
- Agree tooling ownership, replacement and repeat charges.
- Measure nesting pitch and verify carton footprint fit.
- Keep recurring delivered cost separate from one-time annual charges.
Common questions
Can I infer tray performance from a cheaper normalized price?
No. Cost arithmetic does not establish barrier, moisture, protection or food-contact suitability. Compare the verified tray specification and commercial scope separately.
