Start with the protected envelope

Measure the rectangular space required by each item including its approved protection. Use inside dimensions for fit and record whether the product must remain upright. Do not substitute the external size of a shipping box for the internal fit dimensions.

Define a target count rather than assuming that maximum count is the purchasing goal. Pack multiples, picking rules, gross mass and approved manual handling can constrain a useful carton.

Compare several shapes for the same quantity

For twelve 120 × 80 × 50 mm item envelopes, a 3 × 2 × 2 arrangement occupies 360 × 160 × 100 mm before wall clearance. Five millimetres at each opposing wall gives 370 × 170 × 110 mm inside.

A 2 × 2 × 3 grid gives 250 × 170 × 160 mm with the same clearance. These are different practical shapes. The calculator ranks regular-grid candidates by internal volume and then largest side; it does not certify a globally optimal mixed layout.

Preserve allowances through the workflow

A gap is added only between adjacent items: n items require n − 1 gaps along an axis. Wall clearance is added at both ends. Applying a per-item allowance instead changes the required dimensions.

Confirm the manufactured external carton dimensions before pallet planning or requesting a freight quote. Board thickness, folds and style matter; internal fit dimensions do not determine the final freight envelope.

Common questions

Does the smallest volume always make the best box?

No. Handling, product orientation, protection, carton style and pallet patterns can favour another candidate. Compare qualified alternatives.

Does the grid view approve stacking strength?

No. It illustrates geometry only. Compression strength, handling and transport qualification require separate evidence.
