The purchasing question
A roll price is comparable only when you know the label count on that roll. Similar-looking reels can have different label lengths, pitches, winding lengths or counts. Use the invoiced or confirmed quantity rather than inferring count from reel diameter alone.
Calculation method
Material price per label = roll price ÷ labels per roll. Multiply by 1,000 for a thousand-label basis. When comparing order totals, add separate setup and freight charges over the whole order quantity; do not add them to each reel unless they are actually charged per reel.
Worked example
A €145 roll containing 10,000 labels costs €0.0145 per label or €14.50 per thousand. Four such rolls cost €580. Adding €60 freight gives €640 for 40,000 labels, or €16 per thousand delivered. A competing €15.50-per-thousand quote with included freight would total €620 for the same quantity.
Check label dimensions, stock, adhesive, print specification and count before treating the price difference as a saving. A delivered-cost comparison does not establish that a substitute adhesive or liner works on the application line.
Checks before using the result
- Verify the stated complete labels per reel.
- Match technical specifications and quantity tiers.
- Allocate order-level charges once across the full order.
Common questions
Should I compare the number of reels?
Compare total qualified label quantity and order cost. Reel count alone does not establish equivalent output.
