2-Ply Laminate GSM Calculator
Estimate basis weight for a two-ply laminate with two material layers and their dry adhesive addition. This focused layout is useful for structures such as an outer print film laminated to a sealant film.
2 films. 1 adhesive interface.
Typical density. Actual density varies by resin grade and formulation; use supplier or measured data when available. Measured or supplier GSM is generally more reliable than a density-derived estimate. For custom materials, enter a verified density. Do not use a generic density to estimate paper GSM.
Adhesive, print & coatings
Enter zero for an excluded addition. All GSM inputs are dry, retained mass per square meter. Adhesive, ink and coating thickness is not inferred from their GSM.

Film thickness excludes adhesive, ink and coating thickness. Yield is theoretical, before process waste. This estimate includes typical library densities.

Layer GSM = thickness in µm × density in g/cm³.
Total GSM = sum of film-layer GSM + dry adhesive + ink + coatings + other retained mass.
Yield = 1,000 ÷ total GSM.
PET / BOPET: 12.00 × 1.39 = 16.68 g/m²
PE (generic): 60.00 × 0.92 = 55.20 g/m²
Total: 16.68 + 55.20 + 2.00 additions = 73.88 g/m²
Yield: 1,000 ÷ 73.88 = 13.54 m²/kg
The formula, made clear.
The two film layers are calculated individually because they may have different densities. A thin PET layer and a thicker PE layer cannot be combined by adding thicknesses and applying one polymer density. Their dry adhesive interface adds mass beyond the films themselves. If print or coatings are included in additional fields, those retained dry quantities also contribute to the complete structure.
How to use this calculator
- 01
Enter the first and second material layer with their respective thicknesses and densities.
- 02
Enter dry adhesive coat weight for the lamination interface.
- 03
Inspect each layer’s contribution and the resulting complete-film GSM.
A calculation you can check
The example calculates a two-film laminate by summing each film’s own mass contribution and the entered adhesive coat weight.
Use Load example in the tool above. The displayed inputs, calculation breakdown and results form a live, auditable worked example.
Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
