Laminate GSM Calculator
Build a laminate from one to six material layers and estimate total basis weight. Add retained dry adhesive, ink, coating and other mass separately so the calculation reflects the supplied structure.
Build the structure, layer by layer.
Typical density. Actual density varies by resin grade and formulation; use supplier or measured data when available. Measured or supplier GSM is generally more reliable than a density-derived estimate. For custom materials, enter a verified density. Do not use a generic density to estimate paper GSM.
Adhesive, print & coatings
Enter zero for an excluded addition. All GSM inputs are dry, retained mass per square meter. Adhesive, ink and coating thickness is not inferred from their GSM.

Film thickness excludes adhesive, ink and coating thickness. Yield is theoretical, before process waste. This estimate includes typical library densities.

Layer GSM = thickness in µm × density in g/cm³.
Total GSM = sum of film-layer GSM + dry adhesive + ink + coatings + other retained mass.
Yield = 1,000 ÷ total GSM.
PET / BOPET: 12.00 × 1.39 = 16.68 g/m²
PE (generic): 60.00 × 0.92 = 55.20 g/m²
Total: 16.68 + 55.20 + 2.00 additions = 73.88 g/m²
Yield: 1,000 ÷ 73.88 = 13.54 m²/kg
The formula, made clear.
Each film layer contributes thickness in microns multiplied by density in grams per cubic centimetre. The complete laminate basis weight is the sum of those contributions and any additional dry mass. Adhesive and printed coatings belong in the finished film only at their retained dry coat weights; solvent or water that leaves during processing does not remain in laminate GSM. The layer breakdown shows which materials contribute most to the final weight.
How to use this calculator
- 01
Add the material layers in the intended structure and enter each thickness.
- 02
Check every density against supplier data or keep it identified as a typical estimate.
- 03
Add total dry adhesive and other retained additions, then review the layer contributions and total GSM.
A calculation you can check
The example assembles the basis weight of a multilayer film and its entered dry additions using the same layer calculations shown in the builder.
Use Load example in the tool above. The displayed inputs, calculation breakdown and results form a live, auditable worked example.
Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
