TOOL 48 / 211

4-Ply Laminate GSM Calculator

Estimate total GSM for four structural material layers and their retained bonding materials. This provides a transparent mass breakdown for more complex flexible-packaging structures.

4 films. 3 adhesive interfaces.

Load example

Typical density. Actual density varies by resin grade and formulation; use supplier or measured data when available. Measured or supplier GSM is generally more reliable than a density-derived estimate. For custom materials, enter a verified density. Do not use a generic density to estimate paper GSM.

FILM LAYER 01
16.68g/m²

Estimated using typical PET / BOPET density of 1.39 g/cm³.

FILM LAYER 02
24.30g/m²

Estimated using typical Aluminium foil density of 2.7 g/cm³.

FILM LAYER 03
17.10g/m²

Estimated using typical PA6 / Nylon density of 1.14 g/cm³.

FILM LAYER 04
55.20g/m²

Estimated using typical PE (generic) density of 0.92 g/cm³.

Adhesive, print & coatings

Enter zero for an excluded addition. All GSM inputs are dry, retained mass per square meter. Adhesive, ink and coating thickness is not inferred from their GSM.

Formula & substituted values

Layer GSM = thickness in µm × density in g/cm³.

Total GSM = sum of film-layer GSM + dry adhesive + ink + coatings + other retained mass.

Yield = 1,000 ÷ total GSM.

PET / BOPET: 12.00 × 1.39 = 16.68 g/m²

Aluminium foil: 9.00 × 2.7 = 24.30 g/m²

PA6 / Nylon: 15.00 × 1.14 = 17.10 g/m²

PE (generic): 60.00 × 0.92 = 55.20 g/m²

Total: 16.68 + 24.30 + 17.10 + 55.20 + 6.00 additions = 119.28 g/m²

Yield: 1,000 ÷ 119.28 = 8.38 m²/kg

The formula, made clear.

4-ply GSM = Σ(Four layer thicknesses × Their densities) + Total dry additions

Calculate each of the four layer masses independently, then add dry adhesive, ink and coating mass. For a fully laminated four-ply structure, the adhesive total can cover several interfaces; the relevant amount is the sum of actual dry coat weights rather than a presumed value per ply. The breakdown is useful when checking which proposed layer change drives the total GSM and therefore the area yield of a quoted laminate.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01

Enter all four materials with their own film thicknesses and densities.

  2. 02

Enter the dry adhesive at each interface and any known retained print or coating mass.

  3. 03

Review the layer breakdown and total GSM against the complete-structure supplier specification.

A calculation you can check

The example adds the separate mass contributions of four material layers and their specified dry additions to estimate finished laminate GSM.

Use Load example in the tool above. The displayed inputs, calculation breakdown and results form a live, auditable worked example.

Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
