Film Density from GSM and Thickness Calculator

Calculate apparent film density from basis weight and thickness. Use it as a consistency check between mass-per-area and gauge measurements for the same sample.

Use a saved product specification (optional)

Enter your values

First time using this calculator?

Replace the example values with figures from your supplier sheet or measurements. Choose the unit beside each value. Results update as you type; fix any highlighted field before using the result.

GSM means grams per square metre. Net weight excludes the core and other packaging. MOQ means the minimum order quantity. An optional field can stay blank unless the result you need depends on it.

Prices keep the selected currency; changing its label does not convert an exchange rate. Save or export the result after checking your inputs.

g/m²

Use actual supplier or measured GSM when available.

Help with film gsm

GSM is the weight of one square metre of material, in grams. Find it on the supplier specification; use the complete laminate value for layered film.

Help with film thickness

Use the measured or specified material thickness. One micron (µm) is one thousandth of a millimetre.

Results update as you edit. Nothing is saved until you choose to.

Apparent film density

1.39 g/cm³

For multilayer structures this is an effective average, not identification of individual resin grades.

Thickness measurement error directly affects the calculated density.

Density (g/cm³) = GSM ÷ thickness (µm)

16.68 ÷ 12 = 1.39 g/cm³
Example result — replace the sample valuesThe formula works, but the values are illustrative.

Was this result clear?

Calculated from your inputs. Confirm specifications with your supplier.

How sensitive is this result to your assumptions?

Vary one input and inspect apparent film density

All other entered inputs stay fixed. Ranges are your scenarios, not statistical confidence or supplier performance predictions. This uses the same validated calculator engine.

The formula, made clear.

Density (g/cm³) = GSM ÷ Thickness (µm)

The thickness-to-GSM relationship can be rearranged to solve for density. With GSM in grams per square metre and thickness in microns, their numerical ratio gives grams per cubic centimetre. A result that differs from a nominal resin density may reflect the formulation, coatings, multiple layers, voids or measurement uncertainty. The calculator cannot identify a polymer or prove that a supplier has used a particular composition.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01

Enter GSM measured on representative film from the material being assessed.

  2. 02

Enter its corresponding average thickness rather than a minimum or unrelated nominal value.

  3. 03

Compare the apparent density with the intended structure and investigate meaningful discrepancies.

A calculation you can check

The example checks the density implied by a film’s measured basis weight and average thickness.

Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
