Micron to GSM Calculator

Estimate film basis weight from thickness in microns and density in grams per cubic centimetre. Use a material-library density as a starting point, then replace it with a supplier value when available.

Use a saved product specification (optional)

First time using this calculator?

Replace the example values with figures from your supplier sheet or measurements. Choose the unit beside each value. Results update as you type; fix any highlighted field before using the result.

GSM means grams per square metre. Net weight excludes the core and other packaging. MOQ means the minimum order quantity. An optional field can stay blank unless the result you need depends on it.

Prices keep the selected currency; changing its label does not convert an exchange rate. Save or export the result after checking your inputs.

Help with film thickness

Use the measured or specified material thickness. One micron (µm) is one thousandth of a millimetre.

g/cm³

Typical density. Actual density varies by resin grade and formulation; use supplier or measured data when available.

Help with material density

Density is material mass per unit volume. A typical preset is suitable for an early estimate; use the supplier grade value for purchasing decisions.

Example result — replace the inputs

Estimated film GSM

16.68 g/m²
Estimated film yield59.95 m²/kg

Estimated using typical PET / BOPET density of 1.39 g/cm³. Actual density varies by resin grade and formulation.

For a laminate, calculate each material layer separately. Do not use a generic density for paper.

GSM = thickness (µm) × density (g/cm³)

12 × 1.39 = 16.68 g/m²
Example result — replace the sample valuesThe formula works, but the values are illustrative.

Vary one input and inspect estimated film gsm

All other entered inputs stay fixed. Ranges are your scenarios, not statistical confidence or supplier performance predictions. This uses the same validated calculator engine.

The formula, made clear.

GSM = Thickness (µm) × Density (g/cm³)

A square metre of film one micron thick has a volume of one cubic centimetre. This makes the numerical relationship particularly simple: thickness in microns multiplied by density in grams per cubic centimetre equals grams per square metre. The result estimates a uniform material layer. It does not automatically include printing, coatings, adhesive or other layers, all of which add mass to a finished laminate.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01

    Select the film material or enter a custom density.

  2. 02

    Enter nominal or measured layer thickness using the correct thickness unit.

  3. 03

    Use the calculated GSM for preliminary weight and yield calculations, or replace it with measured GSM when known.

A calculation you can check

The example estimates the basis weight of a single material layer from its gauge and editable density.

Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
