Film Weight from Area Calculator

Calculate net film weight from a known area and GSM. Use this when production planning gives square metres but ordering, stock control or freight allocation uses kilograms.

Use a saved product specification (optional)

First time using this calculator?

Replace the example values with figures from your supplier sheet or measurements. Choose the unit beside each value. Results update as you type; fix any highlighted field before using the result.

GSM means grams per square metre. Net weight excludes the core and other packaging. MOQ means the minimum order quantity. An optional field can stay blank unless the result you need depends on it.

Prices keep the selected currency; changing its label does not convert an exchange rate. Save or export the result after checking your inputs.

g/m²

Use actual supplier or measured GSM when available.

Help with film gsm

GSM is the weight of one square metre of material, in grams. Find it on the supplier specification; use the complete laminate value for layered film.

Net film weight

80.000 kg

Weight (kg) = area (m²) × GSM ÷ 1,000

1,000 × 80 ÷ 1,000 = 80 kg

All other entered inputs stay fixed. Ranges are your scenarios, not statistical confidence or supplier performance predictions. This uses the same validated calculator engine.

The formula, made clear.

Net weight (kg) = Area (m²) × GSM ÷ 1,000

Multiplying area by grams per square metre gives the total film mass in grams; division by 1,000 converts it to kilograms. The calculation uses the average GSM of the whole structure, so laminate adhesive and coatings belong in that figure. Area can describe a single roll, several identical reels or a production order, as long as the entered GSM applies to all of it.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01

Enter total film area and select its measurement unit.

  2. 02

Enter complete-film GSM, preferably measured or supplier-declared.

  3. 03

Review net weight before adding core, packaging or process-loss allowances separately.

A calculation you can check

The example converts an area requirement for a film order into the equivalent net material mass for purchasing.

Film area
1000 m²
Film GSM
80 g/m²
1,000 × 80 ÷ 1,000 = 80 kg
Net film weight80.000 kg

Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
