Why finished carton dimensions do not give the blank area

Cost folding-carton material from the approved die-line rather than the external dimensions of the assembled pack.

The purchasing question

A folding carton includes panels, flaps, glue tabs and sometimes windows or cutouts. Its finished length, width and height describe the assembled package, not the sheet footprint consumed by production. Quoting from an improvised surface-area formula can omit material the buyer must pay for.

Calculation method

Use the approved die-line or its verified rectangular envelope for the selected calculation. Envelope area = blank length × blank width. Retained board mass can deduct an explicitly measured cutout fraction; purchased material cost usually still includes the material removed during converting.

Worked example

An approved rectangular envelope of 0.5 m × 0.4 m contains 0.20 m². At 300 GSM, envelope mass is 60 g. If cutouts remove 10% of the board, retained carton board mass is 54 g. At €1.20/kg, the envelope material cost is €0.072 before sheet-layout losses, print or finishing.

The difference between 60 g purchased envelope board and 54 g retained board is important. Do not automatically deduct cutouts from purchasing cost just because they reduce finished carton mass. Use actual sheet nesting for a more detailed material-cost allocation.

Checks before using the result

  • Obtain the actual die-line dimensions.
  • Distinguish envelope area from retained board area.
  • Exclude tooling and converting charges only if the result is labelled material-only.

Common questions

Can I use the finished carton surface area for purchasing?

It is generally insufficient because flaps, tabs, layout and removed material affect the blank consumed. Use a verified blank or sheet layout.
