Packaging Cost per Unit Calculator

Estimate film material cost for one good pack from the production web layout and a kilogram or square-metre price. Include process waste as the fraction of gross film input lost.

Use a saved product specification (optional)

Enter your values

First time using this calculator?

Replace the example values with figures from your supplier sheet or measurements. Choose the unit beside each value. Results update as you type; fix any highlighted field before using the result.

GSM means grams per square metre. Net weight excludes the core and other packaging. MOQ means the minimum order quantity. An optional field can stay blank unless the result you need depends on it.

Prices keep the selected currency; changing its label does not convert an exchange rate. Save or export the result after checking your inputs.

Help with web width

Measure the full width of the flat material from edge to edge, rather than the width of one finished pack. Choose the matching unit.

lanes
g/m²

Use actual supplier or measured GSM when available.

Help with film gsm

GSM is the weight of one square metre of material, in grams. Find it on the supplier specification; use the complete laminate value for layered film.

EUR

Label only. No exchange-rate conversion.

%

Percentage of gross input lost.

Help with process waste

Use a measured or supplier-confirmed percentage where possible. Check whether it applies to gross input or finished output; the formula below shows the basis used here.

Example result — replace the inputs

Material cost per good pack

€0.02526/pack
Material cost per 1,000 good packs€25.26/1,000 packs
Nominal area per unit0.1000 m²/pack
Gross area per good unit0.1053 m²/pack
Film cost per m²€0.2400/m²

Waste is the percentage of gross material lost. Gross requirement is net requirement ÷ (1 − waste rate).

Material cost only; excludes tooling, freight, converting labor and accessories.

Cost/good pack = (width × repeat ÷ lanes) ÷ (1 − waste/100) × price/m²

(0.8 × 0.25 ÷ 2) ÷ (1 − 5/100) × 0.24 = 0.0252631579/pack

The formula, made clear.

Cost/good unit = Width (m) × Repeat (m) ÷ Lanes ÷ (1 − Waste rate) × Price/m²

One machine repeat consumes a rectangle of web: width multiplied by repeat length. Dividing that area by the number of lanes allocates film to one nominal unit. Waste increases the gross film purchased for each good unit, so divide by the retained fraction rather than multiplying by a simple percentage allowance. If the quotation is per kilogram, GSM converts the area allocation into material mass before pricing it.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01

Enter full production web width, machine-direction repeat and the number of units across the web.

  2. 02

Choose the price basis and enter GSM when using a kilogram price.

  3. 03

Enter expected gross-input waste and review material cost per accepted pack.

Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
