Packaging Scrap Cost Calculator
Estimate material value lost to packaging scrap and subtract any recovery credit. Use gross consumption, scrap rate and material price on the same kilogram basis.
Use a saved product specification (optional)
Enter your values
First time using this calculator?
Replace the example values with figures from your supplier sheet or measurements. Choose the unit beside each value. Results update as you type; fix any highlighted field before using the result.
GSM means grams per square metre. Net weight excludes the core and other packaging. MOQ means the minimum order quantity. An optional field can stay blank unless the result you need depends on it.
Prices keep the selected currency; changing its label does not convert an exchange rate. Save or export the result after checking your inputs.
Help with material price per kg
Use the price for one kilogram of the quoted material, excluding freight unless the quote explicitly combines them.
Label only. No exchange-rate conversion.
Additional measurements (optional) — some values entered
These are only needed for additional result units or a more detailed estimate. Entered values still affect the result when this section is closed.
Net scrap material cost
Recovery is an entered net value per kilogram of scrap. Handling or disposal fees are not automatically included.
Net scrap cost = gross kg × scrap/100 × (material price/kg − recovery price/kg)
1,000 × 5/100 × (3 − 0.3) = 135Saved calculations stay in this browser. No account or cloud backup is created.
Save to a product project (optional)

Calculated from your inputs. Confirm specifications with your supplier.

Vary one input and inspect net scrap material cost
All other entered inputs stay fixed. Ranges are your scenarios, not statistical confidence or supplier performance predictions. This uses the same validated calculator engine.
The formula, made clear.
The calculator first finds scrap kilograms as a share of total gross material consumed. That mass multiplied by the purchase price gives its gross material value. A separately entered recovery value per kilogram produces a credit, leaving the net material loss. This isolates material economics; it does not measure the full production cost of rejected packs or the operational consequences of a high scrap rate.
How to use this calculator
- 01
Enter gross material consumed during the run or reporting period.
- 02
Enter scrap as a percentage of that gross input and its material purchase price per kilogram.
- 03
Add a recovery price if applicable, then review gross loss, recovery credit and net material cost.
A calculation you can check
The example values the scrap share of a material run and offsets that cost by the entered recovery credit.

Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
