TOOL 50 / 211

Laminate Cost per m² Calculator

Estimate a laminate’s material cost per square metre by pricing each material layer separately. Add adhesive, ink and coating costs to assemble the supplied material stack.

Build the structure, layer by layer.

Load example

Typical density. Actual density varies by resin grade and formulation; use supplier or measured data when available. Measured or supplier GSM is generally more reliable than a density-derived estimate. For custom materials, enter a verified density. Do not use a generic density to estimate paper GSM.

FILM LAYER 01
16.68g/m²

Estimated using typical PET / BOPET density of 1.39 g/cm³.

FILM LAYER 02
55.20g/m²

Estimated using typical PE (generic) density of 0.92 g/cm³.

Adhesive, print & coatings

Enter zero for an excluded addition. All GSM inputs are dry, retained mass per square meter. Adhesive prices refer to the supplied wet product; the solids percentage converts dry coat weight to wet consumption. Ink, coating and other prices are on a dry retained kilogram basis. Conversion losses, energy, labour and freight are excluded.

Film thickness excludes adhesive, ink and coating thickness. Yield is theoretical, before process waste. This estimate includes typical library densities.

Formula & substituted values

Layer GSM = thickness in µm × density in g/cm³.

Total GSM = sum of film-layer GSM + dry adhesive + ink + coatings + other retained mass.

Yield = 1,000 ÷ total GSM.

Layer material cost/m² = layer GSM ÷ 1,000 × price/kg. Adhesive cost/m² = dry GSM ÷ solids fraction ÷ 1,000 × wet adhesive price/kg.

PET / BOPET: 12.00 × 1.39 = 16.68 g/m²; 16.68 ÷ 1,000 × 3.5 = €0.05838/m²

PE (generic): 60.00 × 0.92 = 55.20 g/m²; 55.20 ÷ 1,000 × 1.8 = €0.09936/m²

Total: 16.68 + 55.20 + 2.00 additions = 73.88 g/m²

Yield: 1,000 ÷ 73.88 = 13.54 m²/kg

Adhesive interface 1: 2 ÷ 1 ÷ 1,000 × 4 = €0.00800/m²

Total material cost: 0.05838 + 0.09936 + 0.00800 + 0.00000 + 0.00000 + 0.00000 = €0.1657/m²

The formula, made clear.

Material cost/m² = Σ(Layer GSM ÷ 1,000 × Layer price/kg) + Added material costs/m²

Each layer’s thickness and density establish kilograms per square metre, which are multiplied by its own kilogram price. Summing those layer costs avoids applying one price to materials with different purchase costs. Additions are also priced by mass: adhesive uses wet purchase price and solids content, while ink, coating and other additions use a dry retained kilogram price. The engine converts these entries into a common area cost.

How to use this calculator

  1. 01

Enter each material layer with thickness, density and its supplier price per kilogram.

  2. 02

Enter dry addition GSM and its matching kilogram price; include the wet adhesive solids percentage.

  3. 03

Review the layer contributions and total material cost before adding processing or commercial charges.

A calculation you can check

The example prices each material in a laminate independently, then includes the entered non-film material cost additions.

Use Load example in the tool above. The displayed inputs, calculation breakdown and results form a live, auditable worked example.

Check the displayed formula and units against your quotation. Use measured GSM, net weight and actual layout dimensions where available. Default densities are planning assumptions, not certified material properties. Calculated cost does not certify strength, compatibility or safe loading.
